100 Word Challenge – Week 56.1: Writer’s Block

The frustrated growl echoed through the room as he scribbled over his words before tossing the note into rubbish with the rest. Again, the words thrashing about his cortex would not trickle down into his fingers.

He knew what he wanted to say, knew how it sounded as it rolled off the tongue, since being clear was essential, if not mandatory. It was as if he could pull down every moon and star as fodder, yet he’d forgotten how to spell.

Stepping out into the night, he howled his thoughts into the empty sky, hoping the heavens would be his quill.

Only silence answered him.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. . .what writer has not been part of this scene at one time or another? Love your personification: growls and howls are both intricate players!

I love this line: It was as if he could pull down every moon and star as fodder, yet he’d forgotten how to spell. 😀 How many times have we had a scene work so perfectly in our heads, then fall flat when it’s put onto paper?

Very nice job capturing the frustration of a writer. I’m certain any artist can sympathize with the feeling, even if they’re not a wordsmith. 🙂

I know we’ve both been here before, and it never gets any less frustrating. Especially during NaNo, when there is a timeline on top of everything else.

  I’ve seen your last couple of entries, but I want to devote proper time to reading and commenting. It’s going to take a little bit more time from me (student move-in was this past Saturday), but I promise I’ll get to them!
