100 Word Challenge – Week 79: Once Upon A Time…

“Don’t touch that!” a voice said out of nowhere as he picked up the shiny object from the grass. The outburst startled  him, “Why not?”

“Because that key is dangerous, especially in the hands of a human! Just set it down, and walk away.”

And being human, such a warning made him curious. However, the real attention grabber was the writing on the key. “’Once Upon A Time…’?”
The voice yelled back something, but he did not hear it. Grabbing the key had revealed the keyhole underneath it, which he slowly unlocked.

Suddenly, the ground fell away under him.

My entry for this week’s 100 Word Challenge from Julia’s Place. And one of the hardest ones I’ve done yet, since this is only the select 100 from 1000+ that this had unfolded into. Might just have to post the rest…

I hope you all enjoy!

This is kinda Alice and Wonderlandish. Love it.

  2. Oopsie! Let’s see, “Always listen to mysterious voices laying down the law?”

I really want to know what happens after he lands. Intriguing.

Humans really should listen when something else talks to them. Really enjoyed this take on the prompt.

Great little Wonderland-like twist! I like how you built everything around the image, putting one more mystery atop the one to come before.

The only thing I’d say to revisit would be that first paragraph:
“Don’t touch that!” a voice came said out of nowhere as he picked up the shiny object from the grass. The outburst startled him, “Why not?”

I think you mean either “came” or “said out of nowhere”. Maybe that was a miss in rewrites? You might also consider a new paragraph for the second sentence, as you’re focusing more directly on the human, not the voice from nowhere.

That was all I saw, though. I loved how simple this was, yet it makes me interested for more! Well done!

How interesting, I wonder what happens next.
