Five Sentence Fiction – To Be Continued…

My time may have ended, but I will not simply fade to time. Legends and champions have walked my halls and we have sailed the stars, and for that I will ever be thankful. My bones now are empty, and my heart lays still, but do not shed a tear for this passing. Instead, I take solace in the knowledge that my children and their progeny will live on, and our name will echo across the lips of all the galaxy.
For such is the duty of the name Enterprise.

Entry #1 for this week’s Five Sentence Fiction from Lillie McFerrin. The theme this week was “empty”, but that doesn’t always have to be a bad thing.

I hope you all enjoy.

  1. Highly imaginative! I enjoyed this one very much.

  2. That’s a lovely concept…we all leave legacies, so even when we’re gone there’s always something left behind!

I remember visiting Big E (before her decommissioning, of course) sometime in the 90s, I think, with my dad. πŸ™‚ She must have been between cruises; it was definitely pre-Gulf. A friend of ours did some of the second unit fighter footage for the film “Top Gun,” and that was done on the old Enterprise. He gave a copy of that to my father, and I just think of the look on his face when he watched it. He got this huge smile…!

It may not be the Enterprise you intended me to think of, but thanks for posting this. In just a few sentences, you brought back that really lovely memory for me. Besides, I think even the NCC-1701 series owes a lot to their namesake. πŸ™‚

    • It was my pleasure to take you down memory lane πŸ™‚
And I agree that, even in fiction, the name Enterprise will always carry that distinction to it. I wrote this one with NCC-1701-A in mind, since I think she was the only one to ever make it to decommissioning, and given her treatment in the expanded material, she was probably better off resting in peace.

    This is beautifully written.

  6. I love the angle you have written this from, not of loss but a sort of passing on the torch… great writing!
